The World According to Garp is probably my favorite, though. I have a strange level of comfort when reading his books that I think derives from reading someone who is clearly so comfortable in this language, and tells stories with this modest and immense skill.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17350861069153040567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-972647577919000054.post-29576113531353181192010-03-25T19:07:14.571-07:002010-03-25T19:07:14.571-07:00Me too! Once years ago my son and I drove to the Oregon coast and listened to The World According To Garp on tape and when we got home there was still have the last tape left so we drove around and around and around the block until it was finished. I had read it many times. It was his first. We were both spellbound. We both cried and laughed and even now 15 years later he'll say out of the blue GARP BIT BONKIE!

Congratulations on your baby bump:))))Radish Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06534752971317927559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-972647577919000054.post-77674123285955764092010-03-25T15:34:00.186-07:002010-03-25T15:34:00.186-07:00john irving is one of my favorites (and i love you...john irving is one of my favorites (and i love your owls!)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07522737346381837048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-972647577919000054.post-32026769556791710962010-03-25T10:06:51.158-07:002010-03-25T10:06:51.158-07:00I've read A Prayer for Owen Meaney...brilliant...I've read A Prayer for Owen Meaney...brilliant work!!Booksinista!https://www.blogger.com/profile/13126560699355410558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-972647577919000054.post-31486461521056566182010-03-25T08:26:23.828-07:002010-03-25T08:26:23.828-07:00john irving is the first author I look for in a us...john irving is the first author I look for in a used book store, thrift shop, garage and estate sales, and sale tables. I have collected more than I have read and when I feel in the mood, I read his wonderful descriptions of true life and feel what his characters feel and I am transformed. I have reread a few, after years of living my own life, with great surprise at how much I recognize and how much I see for the first time. Recently I had trouble enveloping myself in 'the water method man'(my first time) so it sits on my bedside table, awaiting an acceptable welcome. Will move it up in the stack now!

P.S. I checked out Robert B. Parker's first Spenser novel from the library and read it last week while on vacation. I had never read him either until you wrote about it and piqued my interest. I was delighted to see the entire shelf full of his books at the library. I love a good series!
