'Our' spider, Charlotte, died, and left behind this egg, which sat nestled in the safety of Charlotte's web protection all winter, and will be hatching soon.
What a beautiful post and photos. We used to have a large spider that lived outside our bedroom on the deck. We would lay in bed and watch her catch her dinner at night. One day she was gone and left us a gift, too.
Our spiders name was Charlotte, too. As a matter of fact, we have had a lot of spiders named Charlotte.
I am not sure why so many people are fearful of spiders. I think they are so cool.
We get the HUGE banana spiders on our porches here. They are amazing and make webs that stretch for miles. Well, almost. And those webs trap mosquitoes and other annoying bugs and so I refer to my spiders as "more pet than pest." I love to watch them. But really, they are so big that their poop stains my porch floors. These are seriously large spiders. But lovely, nonetheless. Beautiful pictures, Ms. Maggie May.

the photo of your daughter is just gorgeous! the funeral that i was at had a memory slide-show and it just hit home how totally important photos of your life are!!! keep snapin'!!! & don't forget to get a few of yourself. i was telling my husband on the way home, - my slide-show would have to be of all of the photos i take - because i'm not in hardly any of them!!! self-portraits, here i come.... would it look weird if i started posting pictures of myself on my blog??? i dunno.
AAAh! It'll be a month or so until we can get busy in our own backyard here in Illinois...it's supposed to snow tonight! Spiders are good. I wish all the best to Charlotte's offspring.
That little bird on the garden stake is a real bird, by the way. I realized he kind of looks like part of the object, but he was just sitting there, a nice distance from our cats, observing.

I remember once as a little girl I was outside playing, you know when we were allowed to play a long way from home. Well anyway, a big storm was brewing up and it started to thunder, so I ran home through the woods, right into a big spider web with a very big spider. I totally freaked out, I couldn't get it off of me, so I tore off my shirt running home. haha! I know they are good for my garden, but those things still freak me out!

We've had many Charlotte's, too. I don't mind spiders at all as long as they're outside. If they make it in the house, though, I know they will fall prey to Sadie, the great spider-hunting cat.
I love the texture in the photos - the bold contrasts that give a sharp richness to everything. Your blog is great and often makes me sigh with happiness.

These photos are absolutely gorgeous. There's something undeniably lovely about the earthy feel of it all. The green is so rich and lovely, I wish we had more of it here up north!
These pictures really are lovely! You are so multi-talented! And a much better person than I! I would have to think long and hard about keeping the egg. But they will be neat to photograph at least.

Rachel that is so sweet! You made me smile. And laugh- I am not super happy about tons of spiders crawling everywhere...but they aren't poisonous!!

I have Major issues with spiders. living in africa I have been bitten 3 times be poisonous ones annd now i cant even watch them on tv!

ReplyDeleteCharlotte certainly gets around...She had been in my guest bathroom this week because I found a million of her babies in the bath tub.
When Son #1 was about 6 years old he said to me one morning while getting ready for school, "Mum is there something on my head?"
"It's ok " I replied flicking off a huntsman the size of a skull cap.
There are many huntsmen (Bite, but not toxic) in our neck of the woods, and red backs (Bite, and can be lethal) too...
