Just read a review of this at your nudge (thanks, Maggie).
Charging elephants & head hunters...sounds like a rich book & fitting title. You must have one sweet thrift store in your neighborhood.
PS: Is the ACT thrift store still open in San Diego off the 5 freeway down by Mission Beach? I used to go there every Saturday morning for their 1/2 off sales, trying clothes on in the aisles and finding gems. Miss that place.
I'll look for it next time I'm out! Even the cover looks adventurous with its zebra stripes. And there I go, breaking the first rule - judging a book by its cover. Heh.
Also, my verification word is "peepe" and that made me giggle.
it's so beautiful, the cover itself, the heft and weight of it, the form. just came in for a patron. I asked her where she'd heard about it and she said, a blog, of course. I asked her to let me know how it was. sounds fascinating. Glad you liked it.
This is on my list from the last time you posted about it... but to be honest, the list is mental, so this is a GREAT reminder for me to physically MAKE the list!
Thanks Maggie. ps Harley is MUCH better. Thanks for all your support and suggestions. xo
as a child it is THIS book I remember the most from my parents library, mostly due to the jacket.... this post brought back good memories, now I want to read it!

"Her looks fading, the vain Lispector became increasingly reclusive and demanding. Addicted to cigarettes and sleeping pills, she exhibited erratic and sometimes imperious behavior. She would call friends in the middle of the night and flee dinner parties for little apparent reason. She had a reputation for being a liar."-<em>NYT on Clarice Lispector
My dear child, who can tell? One can only tell that, by remembering something which happened where we lived before; and as we remember nothing, we know nothing about it; and no book, and no man, can ever tell us certainly.
Some couples don’t ask much of one another after they’ve worked out the fundamentals of jobs and children. Some live separate intellectual and cultural lives, and survive, but the most intense, most fulfilling marriages need, I think, to struggle toward some kind of ideological convergence. Norman Rush

Thank you for the recommendation. I have not read it.
You're especially lucky because when I looked it up on Amazon.co.uk they had 2 of those same editions and each was over 100.00£
Lucky girl ;c)
fantastic title - reminds me of that mary oliver poem

Excellent jacket. And the book sounds cool.
I was in a play one where one of the characters thought she was Osa Johnson. My character thought she was Susan B Anthony.
None of us got to wear a zebra jacket, though. That would've been cool. :-)
Intrigued!
I'm going to take your word for it and try to get a copy on ebay.
read it! it's truly inspirational what Osa did- as a woman- with her life during that time period, plus it's a damn good adventure/love story.
Great title, man.
Okay, now I'm totally intrigued, if for the title alone :)

This could be made into a pretty sweet valentines card. How is the book? Certainly begs for opening.
I've had this book on my Wish List for awhile now. Glad to see it is deservedly on my list!

You are lucky, what a gorgeous book! Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to hunt it down :-)

I am enamored with the cover. It's said that's always a bad idea, but with your support backing it, I think I'll take a chance. :)
