maggie and taymar
summer 2009
Summer 2004, small home, orange carpets: roomates necessary. Craigslist: ROOMATE PLEASE DON'T SUCK. Taymar appears at my door like Mary Poppins on coke, all hippied out and gorgeous and magical. Her long red tangly hair reminds me of a mermaid. She has a good face, I secretely appraised. She was aware without the bitterness, the edge, that can come with that awareness. A single mother, her son Caspian in diapers, she pulled out her boob and nursed him as Mr. Curry and I spoke to her in our living room. She started talking and my mouth dropped open. I looked at Mr. Curry and he was grinning at me. Happy for me. He nodded. Of course, he was saying, she can move in. I practically begged her. She talked about co-sleeping with Caspian. She ate organic foods and little shitty foods. She read. She loved music. She loved art. She is a graphic designer. She was so very kind to her son and to Lola, Ian and Dakota. She made fun of herself. She made fun of me. She made an inappropriate joke. I was sold.
The best roomate experience of my life. Lola fell in love, hard. I lost Lola for that year and a half, and it only hurt a teensy bit. Taymar was so patient with Lola, and I did try to set boundries, to make sure Taymar had plenty of space, but she brushed it off. She was goobery with Lola. She cooked with her. We all went on walks. Taymar is the kind of girl who could walk around half naked in front of your husband and you wouldn't want to kill her, because she's so fucking guileless. She's so GOOD. Gooder. Taymar and I stayed up until 4am talking more nights that we should have. Mr. Curry loved her. She endeared herself to the boys. She is off color, wild at heart- truly, wild at heart. She travels more than anyone I"ve ever met, her little guy at her side. Driving, flying, fearlessly, kid in tow, figuring it out as she goes along. Her balls out taking of what she wants in life is astonishing and awesome. She wanted to start her own company and moved in with her sister and works hard and produces awesome movies and graphics. If she wants to go somewhere, she goes, and figures out the details when she gets there, and meets a lot of cool people along the way.
Eventually she moved to Santa Barbara. But we have always stayed friends, and every year that passes I love her more. She's my homie for life. I love you Taymar!

How lucky to have someone so good and fearless in your life! A rare gem in this world of rugged rocks.
She sounds fabulous! You ladies are gorgeous... I'm glad you've built such an amazing friendship.
What a brilliant tale! It's brilliant when you find a soul sister x
And now I think I love her too.
I miss my wandering friend. He's MIA someplace in Arizona.
That was a lovely post, and sweet picture.
peace,

Isn't it funny how people cross our paths that change our world?
I offered my home to a friend in need, not really expecting her to take me up on it, but threee days later her bags packed...she landed on my doorstep. Best year of my life...and even now years later she's still my best friend.
Thanks for your post.
:-)
Great post, Maggie. I've always been able to tell when I meet someone if they are going to be in my life for the long haul or just ships passing in the night. It's rare to find someone who will join you for life.
aw damn, how lucky you both are. after reading this, i feel like ive lived with her before!
Oh, BFF's for life! I love it! Isn't it amazing where you find the greatest people i your life?! For me that was a girl pushing a stroller in a downtown Oktoberfest!
What an great post... there's nothing like an awesome girlfriend. I might just have to write a post about one of mine!
Ah flat mates. We're trying to tell the kids about the virtues of flat mates. Kids today are missing out hangin' at home with their olds. It's all about the money and the things they want to have that their stupid folks support them with by allowing themselves to go poor in the meantime. What the? Where's the spirit of independence, the not having enough coin for a McDonalds burger, the eating the mouldy cheese at the back of the fridge that isn't even yours, the staying up all night drinking the combined stash of alcohol? Come on kids. Move out and meet people and LIVE. Gee sus. (This rant is from a parent O.V.A.H living with dependent, read again, dependent adults. I am old - 35 - but I have a life too, ya know).
It's so nice to hear a "good" roommate story as opposed to all the horrible ones out there. She sounds like a wonderful friend.
What a gift. I rented a room in my house when I lived in Minnesota and also got a great roommate, but we've lost touch over the years because I suck at keeping up contacts.
Wonderful post Maggie, and the picture is adorable. Gratitude for finding and keeping the right people in our life always makes me smile. Sheer good fortune for us :)
What a lovely tribute to her. I think I love her too.
You both look happy, beautiful and so "sure" of having each other...in your heart, always. ~Mary
with a name like 'taymar' you're kind of predisposed to magic.
That's great that you had and have someone like that in your life.
She sounds fantastic, it's wonderful to have people like that in your life.
oh, yes!
i have one of these in my satchel.
her name is ursula. goes any and everywhere with kids in tow. from the moment i looked into her face the very first time i knew i would adore her for life.
Isn't it fantastic when people come into our lives that stick? They get you and you get them? I love that. It's so wonderful that you had/have that.
Chemistry, unexplainable. I too have (very rarely) had that instant click with someone who will be a friend til the very end, even if we go months or years without seeing each other. Sweet tribute.
It's wonderful when you find someone you connect with, instantaneously, and they become a friend for life.
Nice to have a positive connection like that. It is good other people who often make life bearable.
I'm flat out jealous of her...I want someone to write something like this about me. Seriously, I feel like I know her - beautifully done Maggie - and I like her - what a treasure.
What a wonderful friendship.
how wonderful and rare to meet friends that you truly 'click' with - lucky for both of you :-)
gooder...
sounds like a perfect fit for you.
A good roommate always makes life's better. Especially when you live abroad, all alone..
so when I am sad, she'll be my healer.
Thx for your sharing, Maggie:)
Wow, Maggie! I couldn't read this on my iphone, so I am just now getting to the computer and I am so touched by what you wrote, and the sweet comments people left. I've been feeling down about myself lately, so this was a real boost. I love you guys so much! It was so wonderful to see you all again...you are totally family to me. Did I really wander around half naked around Ed when I was living there? I don't remember that at all. You are definitely the best roommates I've ever had. I love you so much, I hope that you will visit soon. Give kisses to my sweet, sweet Lola, my little angel, that I love and adore. Mwah!
It's such a risk, isn't it? But a roommate can be the best, most intense kind of friendship.
Some of the best people in my life are the people that were brought in when my mom took in housemates.
We take our family where we can get it!
