i've got a crush on this movie

“What came first: the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?” - Rob Gordon, High Fidelity

I love these crush things you have. With few exceptions, we might be rivals.

Great quote, High fidelity rocks.

I listened to lots of The Cure & Depeche Mode in high school. too much? I don't think so. Their lyrics were scripture to me.

Good question. However, I believe teenaged angst was probably around before pop-music.

Loved the book by Nick Hornby. I should watch the movie.

This gets me thinking. A lot. I love music but it does have a powerful force over me that's never quite comfortable.

High Fidelity ... what a great book. I used to wonder at length on all the various nerds ... the music nerd, the computer nerd, the gaming nerd ... and they're all cool (because I don't know what that is anymore).

There are a few movies that I will watch over and over and over again. This is one of 'em!

I love that movie. And the book.

I'm pretty sure that teens are depressed or frustrated and that they then turn to music. That's what made the lyrics so profound...the writer him/herself probably felt that same angst.

I remember finding Nine Inch Nails back in the early 90's and thinking...where have you been?!! I didn't get depressed because I was listening to Pretty Hate Machine....I was listening to Downward Spiral BECAUSE I was depressed.

Do I even make sense? I know what I"m trying to say...

For each major breakup in my life, I've chosen a song that I listen to over and over. It reminds me of a conversation I had once with a girl who used to cut herself. She said, "It lets the pain out."

As far as my teenaged self was concerned, the music I listened to on my little stereo in my room at night saved my soul. My poison? Bob Dylan, The Beatles,Carol King, Joni Mitchell, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller Band, and the list goes on and on.

Love High Fidelity, both the book and the movie.

I think the misery is there but the music helps you to savour the moment rather than pushing it aside.

I love that movie too! So much so that just reading the blurb in my dashboard had me itchy to put it on immediately -- I knew just what movie it was by the first line alone :-) Excellent choice!

Good movie and good quote! As a teenager I used to listen to The Smiths all day and revel in my misery. Strangely, that makes me smile now.

Have never seen the movie, but read the book. I was never really miserable. Always envied those deep, soulful women and wished I was as them. They are true artists. Geniuses, really! Their creativity knows no bounds. So I cannot say which comes first.

Interesting conundrum... I'll have to think about it.

Love the art work and the quote. Nice.
