i've got a crush on this woman

Frances McDormand
the name Frances *Francie* is on our baby girl list

she's in 2 of my favorite movies, ever:

Fargo
and the fantastic, totally marvelous, compulsively watchable Wonder Boys, based on a book just as marvelous.
If you haven't watched either or one, I recommend,
I
recommend!

and

she is just one of those people that makes everything three times as more interesting because she is saying it or she is doing it. it's the metre of her voice, the quirk in her eye, the intellect mixed with mysterious weirdness, the adult woman sexual confidence, the turn in the corners of her mouth, the frankness of her speech- her interpretation of life is fascinating.

I wholeheartedly support you in that crush--she is awesome.

She also used to be my brother's neighbor in the Santa Monica enclave of cottages he lived in. Until he moved to the OC. I doubt any of his new neighbors are that cool now.

Oh I like her too. She is such a great actress. She was amazing in Fargo & I like her in Burn after Reading. She's just so believable in her roles. It's great.

Yes. I also loved her in Laurel Canyon - so unexpected and so SEXY.

I'll watch her closely the next time I see her. As for now, I think I can see the intellect mixed with mysterious weirdness.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and the entire clan.

I agree. I hope that if the occasion arises, you and I would be able to SHARE some of these crushes...

So funny, I was telling my husband just the other night that Frances McDormand is the woman I would turn for. I love Laurel Canyon.

Lydia said...

Agreed. Fargo was on TV the other night and I thought I'd watch a few minutes of it and wound up enjoying the whole movie all over again. She's one of those actresses that I enjoy more each time I see her.

you may be the only person in the world I know that likes Fargo. Being from MN, I hate it because it makes us look like idiots :P

my middle name is Frances :)

Two thumbs up on both of these flicks, and on Ms. McDormand. There was an interesting interview with a woman who just wrote a book on Cohen Brothers films on NPR the other day. She talked about Frances McDormand's role as the person of decency, in Fargo.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

I agree: she's wonderful!!!

Everything I've ever seen her in rocked my heart. She is fantastic and gorgeous and everything you said so well. Remember her in Almost Famous, telling her son with such pathos, Don't do drugs!"?
And Wonder Boys WAS a fabulous movie and the book - I've read it twice.
You have SUCH good taste, Maggie. (And I say that because we so often agree- of course.)

I do believe the only role I've seen her in is the house-mother in Madeline . . . kind of sad!

(But my mom's name is Frances, and everyone calls her Francie--I love that name too :))

I totally agree about Laurel Canyon. I loved her in that! We seem to love the same actresses. I remember you wrote about Helen MIrren and I love her too!

Thanks Maggie,

warmly,
Erika

Yep. She's one talented gem of a woman. She's not in Almost Famous for many scenes but they are all winners...

I totally agree. I've never seen Wonder Boys but now it's on my list. I also agree with Mosey Along about Laurel Canyon. She's what made that movie.

I also crush on the Frances. I always think of her as the crazy mom from "Almost Famous".

she was one of my celeb sightings! i saw her in Bolinas (cali hippie town near stinson beach) and she has a home there and i saw her in this massive crowd downtown for the 4th of july and she was being introduced to someone and i heard her say "Hi, I'm Fran". she had a huge gorgeous straw hat on, too. down to earth doesnt even begin to describe. i was star struck all day!

Good call honey.

I love her!! I always forget her name. You have great tastes- I loved those films as well.

Being a wife of a Coen brother, she must be awesome.

Petit fleur said...

Did you know she was the crazy mom in Raising Arizona? I watched that move a dozen times thinking "DAMN! She seems so familiar somehow" before finally figuring it out. (I can't read credits... too small)

Yea, you are right about her. She's pure gold.

One of her earlier films, Hidden Agenda, is one of my favorites. Have you seen it? She plays the wife of a human rights lawyer murdered in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It's brilliant.

Mel said...

Me too! Since the first time I saw her on film and every time thereafter. She's amazing.

So are you.

Merry Christmas. Wishing you much joy and love and lots of good movies! We've rented a pile to watch together.

I love her, too. My husband once told me, while I was very pregnant, that I reminded him of her character in Fargo. I was so flattered I cried. But then I used to cry a lot back then =)

Happy Holidays

Oh, I love her, too. And Fargo is one of my favorites - I can't see it on cable and NOT watch the whole thing. I was pretty bummed when I found out a few years ago that it wasn't REALLY a true story.

I big love her, too, in large part bevcause she's so fearless. And Wonder Boys is one of my favorites. The movie and the book are so different, and both excellent, which so seldom happens. I loaned it to someone and my heart is still missing it.
